Leone Stars Poised for Crucial AFCON Qualifier Against Zambia
The Sierra Leone’s national football team, Leone Stars, are bracing for a pivotal Group H Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2024 qualifier against the Chipolopolo of Zambia at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium. Head coach Amidu Karim, aware of the stakes, acknowledges the pressure his team faces but remains confident in their preparation.
Following a goalless draw in their opening match against Chad, the Leone Stars are determined to secure their first victory and bolster their campaign.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Monday, Karim shared his thoughts on the upcoming challenge. While optimistic, he was measured in his assessment of the match.
“As a coach, you must embrace the pressure. We understand the importance of tomorrow’s game, and we know Zambia is a strong team. But we’ve prepared well. Our approach is simple: we’re here to win,” said Karim.
Despite Zambia’s recent 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast, Karim respects the Chipolopolo’s formidable abilities, particularly their physicality and depth. He emphasized that every opponent requires a tailored strategy, adding, “We know Zambia is a tough opponent, especially at home. I’ve followed their squad closely, and they have quality players, including several competing in international leagues. But my team is ready to fight and put in the hard work needed to get a result.”
Assistant captain Yemi Dunia echoed Karim’s sentiments, expressing both gratitude for the hospitality of the Zambian Football Federation (FAZ) and determination to secure qualification for AFCON. “We’ve been well-received, and we understand what’s at stake. We’re prepared and focused on achieving our goal,” Dunia said.
As the Leone Stars prepare to face a well-organized Zambian side, their resolve and optimism remain high. With AFCON qualification on the line, the team is ready to give it their all in pursuit of victory.
