Minister of Sports, Hon. Ibrahim Nyelenkeh has handed over a cheque of Two Billion Leones (LE 2, 000, 000, 000) (which is equivalent to Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand United States Dollars (USD250, 000)) to the Chairman of the Premier League Board (PLB), Esq Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai for the organization of the 2019 Sierra Leone Premier League.
Speaking at a well-attended ceremony at the Atlantic Hall, Stadium Hostels, Brookfields, the Sports Minister heap praises on the Sierra Leone President, His Excellency, RTD. Brig. Julius Maada Bio and his Chief Minister, Prof. David Francis for what he described as their timely intervention to change the face of football in the country.
Minister Nyelenkeh said football is a unifying game that should be played without fear of being marginalized noting further that football is the only discipline that has no room for tribal sentiment, regional or political affiliation.
“I therefore urge all Sierra Leoneans to use the Premier League as a springboard to change the face of football in the country. I also implore the PLB to use this amount provided by government judiciously and ensure that the league becomes as lucrative and competitive as it should be,” Minister Nyelenkeh said.
Receiving the cheaque on behalf of the PLB, the Chairman, Esq. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai thanked His Excellency the President of Sierra Leone, the Minister of Sports and the government of Sierra Leone for what he described as “a first of its kind donation to the Sierra Leone Premier League”.
“I am greatly overwhelmed by this gesture and believe that what we are given is a responsibility to restructure, revive and rebrand football in our country: we will do just that and every penny will be expended for the intended purpose,” Mr Abdulai assured adding that “For the past 15 years, I have been taking government to task on issues bothering the people of this country but today, I’m here to say Thank You Mr President and thank you to the government of Sierra Leone”.
The Sierra Leone Premier League will kick off on Sunday January 27 at the Siaka Stevens Stadium, Brookfields with Mighty Black Pool (The Tiss-Tass Boys) locking horns with their arch rivals; East End Lions (The Killers) in the 2019 opener.
Prior to the opener, the House of Representatives will take on the Cabinet Ministers in an entertaining encounter that is expected to feature the President, Vice President or the Chief Minister leading an experience Cabinet team while the Speaker of Parliament or his representative will lead the youthful and energetic House of Representatives team.
“This is to show how united we are to see football grow in our country and create a better playing environment for the many talents we have in the country,” a member of the House of Representatives said.
